Without light, there is no color. However, if you limit the light frequency spectrum to the range of 380-315 nm, you can create wonderful things with fluorescent colors.
Similar images existed in the seventies. Posters for popular music bands and hippie festivals of the time were often designed in bright UV colors. My work with black light and fluorescent colors began experimentally. Neon tubes, LEDs, pressure lamps—everything was tried. Which colors and pigments from which manufacturer were best suited? The problem with all the tested colors was the same: they didn't cover as well as "normal" acrylic paints. Under black light, they often looked patchy. The goal was to make an image look just as good with as without UV radiation. The solution was simple, but required a lot of work and patience.
Up to four layers of paint were sometimes applied to the images. This means painting the same picture not just once, but four times. Only then was I satisfied with the result. The ideas for the individual motifs followed gradually. Motifs like "...the Spacewitch that is farting her way through space" or "...the Assibot shooting at the Peacefrog" had everyone laughing heartily. The pictures "Kiez Space" and "Psycho Safari" again show influences from my hometown. Anyone familiar with Hamburg will recognize them immediately.
