BACKGROUND STORY
The idea for this image came from a photograph taken at the White House on April 17, 1970. Nixon had requested two songs from Cash, as was customary at this annual event: Guy Drake's "Welfare Cadillac" and Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee." Both were so-called "torch songs" against hippies and African Americans.

Cash refused the president's request and did not sing the songs. The scandal was complete.

After the concert, Nixon addressed the invited audience:
„One thing I've learned about Johnny Cash is that you don't tell him what to sing." This remark drew laughter 

from the audience.
